Les Abymes

Les Abymes is a town with 59 311 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. It is located in the agglomeration to Pointe -à- Pitre is the main town of 5 cantons. They are all named after Les Abymes and numbered 1-5. The small town is known for the manufacture of sugar, cocoa and coffee.

A first mention dates back to 1696, when the missionary Jean -Baptiste Labat, called Père Labat, Guadeloupe visited. At that time the settlement existed under the protection of a castle.
