Les Arcs, Var

Les Arcs, also called Les Arcs -sur -Argens, is a commune with 6743 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Les Arcs is located in a broad valley at the confluence of Argens and Réal. To the north there are small partly forested, partly planted hills rise. In the south, on the other side of the valley, rise high rugged foothills of the Massif des Maures to the 301 m high Peynier. From the higher districts, the visitor has a beautiful panoramic view of the Argenstal.

The community is located about ten kilometers from Draguignan, the former prefecture of the department, and the historic Sarazenenhochburg La Garde -Freinet away at an important passage on the way from the sea inland. Already in ancient Roman times led here a bridge of the Via Aurelia on the Argens. A modern sequel finds the traffic engineering weight of Les Arcs in the SNCF railway station on the route Marseille- Ventimiglia at which also holds the TGV.

History

In 1010, the Latin name for Archos (arc) was used for the site, which dates back to Castrum de Arcubus.

The Abbey Celle- Roubaud was initially founded in 1038 as a Benedictine monastery. From 1260 to 1499 the Abbey was a Carthusian Charterhouse of, 1504 Franciscan Monastery.

Personalities

  • The Sacred Rose Lina von Celle- Roubaud was born in 1263 in Les Arcs (Château d' Arcs ) and died in 1329 at the Abbey Celle- Roubaud. 15 -year-old, she joined the Carthusian interior. From around 1300, it served as prioress of the monastery in her home village. Even during his lifetime it was regarded as a strict penitent and was praised for her charisma and her miraculous powers. Rose Lina is called in the Catholic tradition as an advocate for eye diseases. It is considered a patron of the Carthusians and Maltese. In art she is represented in habit with candle, lily, ring and book. Roselina of Celle- Roubaud was canonized in 1859. Her grave is in the chapel of Celle- Roubaud.
  • Les Arcs is the home of the naturalist Guillaume Antoine Olivier (1756-1814)
  • Antoine Truc, a member of the Council of Five Hundred ( Conseil des Cinq -Cents during the Board ), comes from Les Arcs.
