Les Assions

Les Assions is a municipality with 665 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department Ardèche and Rhône- Alpes. Its inhabitants are (it) called Assionais.

Geography

The municipality is located in the south of the department, bordering the gorges of the river Chassezac and the Cevennes. It is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monts d' Ardèche. Neighboring municipalities are Les Vans and Lablachère. The nearest major town is in Aubenas 28 kilometers northeast. Also, the flow Salindres crosses the area.

History

Les Assions was in the Middle Ages under the rule of the diocese of Viviers, to which the community is still one today. Finds of Roman civilization, but already point to a settlement of the area in ancient times. In the 14th century the village was hit by five major fire and almost completely destroyed.

Featured Buildings provide the church with a Romanesque facade, and it is rustic chapel Sainte- Appolonie from the year 1871, from which one has a view over the entire community. It was built by the young men of the village, when they were returned from the Napoleonic Wars. The gorges and branched watercourses of the rivers Chassezac and Salindres are primarily a destination for many water sports around.
