Les Lilas

Les Lilas is a commune in the Seine -Saint -Denis with 22 505 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The city is located about six kilometers east of Paris, and now forms a part of its suburbs. It is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Europe. Les Lilas is different from many other settlements in Seine- Saint- Denis: the proportion of welfare recipients, the unemployed and school dropouts are only slightly higher than the average in the Ile- de -France.

Its inhabitants are called Purple Parisiens. The motto of Lilas is: " J'étais fleur, je suis cité " ( roughly: "I have flowered, I am city ").

Geography

The city is located in the northeastern suburbs of Paris to the south of the department of Seine- Saint- Denis. The neighboring communities are Paris, Le Pré -Saint- Gervais, Pantin, Romain Ville and Bagnolet.

History

Les Lilas was taken on July 24, 1867 by the merger of part of the territories of Romainville, of Pantin and Bagnolet.

Traffic

Les Lilas is located on the station Mairie des Lilas, the terminus of metro line 11, and is thus connected to the transport network in the Paris area.
