Les Menuires

Les Menuires is the name of a ski resort in the French Alps in the Savoie département.

Location

The village belongs to the municipality of Saint -Martin- de -Belleville in the Savoie and is located about 50 km southeast of Albertville. Les Menuires is situated at an altitude 1450-2850 meters, the resort center is at 1850 meters. The place is located in the middle of two other resorts in the Vallée des Belleville, Saint -Martin- de -Belleville (1450 m) and Val Thorens (2300 m).

Ski resort

The Vallée des Belleville is connected to the ski resorts of Vallée Saint -Bon ( Courchevel, La Tania, Le Praz ) and the Vallée des Allues ( Meribel, Mottaret ). The three valleys form the Trois Vallées, which is the world's largest ski area with its 600 km of slopes and 200 lifts according to own data.

Les Menuires ski area is snow sure normally from December to April. At lower altitudes, extensive snowmaking facilities ensure adequate even in spring snow cover. The ski area has 160 km of slopes and 36 lifts.

Owner of the ski area is the Compagnie des Alpes, the world's largest operator of ski resorts.

History

The name is linked to the coal mines, which formerly existed in this area. Only with the expansion of the ski area from the 1960s, the town began to grow strongly.

In Les Menuires and Val Thorens part of the Alpine Ski competitions ( slalom) took place in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
