Les Molunes

Les Molunes is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Les Molunes is situated at 1250 m above sea level. M., and thus one of the highest towns in the Jura Mountains, about eight miles southeast of the town of Saint- Claude ( a straight line ). The scattered settlement community extends high Jura, in a hollow of the Hautes- Combes, west of the Valley of Valserine.

The area of ​​20.80 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is almost exclusively on the plateau of the Hautes- Combes (mean 1250 m. M. ). The landscape is undulating and shows natural features such as ridges and troughs oriented southwest-northeast direction according to the strike of the Jura Mountains in the area. The hollows, including the Combe de Laisia ​​, have no surface drainage, as the rain water seeps into the porous limestone substrate. At various points there are typical karst features such as sinkholes and karst fields. With 1,330 m above sea level. M. is achieved on a ridge in the center of the municipality is the highest elevation of Les Molunes. The plateau of the Hautes- Combes shows a loose structure of pasture and forest.

To the west of the municipality floor extends to the viewpoints Belvédère de la Cernaise and La Roche Blanche ( 1140 m above sea level. M. ) above the steep escarpment to the Gorges du Flumen. The only above-ground river is the Bief of Parres, in an erosion valley ( southern boundaries ) is located and the area drained to the Gorges du Flumen at Saint -Claude. In the east, the municipality area extends to the river running between the Valserine Lélex and Mijoux and thus covers the entire wooded west slope ( Côte Signet ). The area of Les Molunes is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

Les Molunes is a scattered settlement, consisting of groups of farms and individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Les Molunes are Septmoncel and Lajoux in the north, Mijoux in the east, and Lélex Bellecombe in the south and Les Moussières and Villard -Saint -Sauveur in the West.

History

The high plateau of Les Molunes belonged to the monastery of Saint -Claude. Until the 18th century, most farms were not maintained throughout the year. It was not until 1790 Les Molunes was a separate municipality after the separation of Septmoncel. The village does not have its own church.

Population

With 143 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Les Molunes one of the smallest towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 563 persons were still counted ), a slight increase in population was recorded since the mid- 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Les Molunes was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, as well as by the forestry village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the community.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Les Moussières after Lajoux. The main access is from Les Moussières. Further road links exist with Septmoncel and Bellecombe.
