Les Rotours

Les Rotours is a commune of 106 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

The community lies on the Orne, 24 kilometers north-east of Flers. Apart from the actual location of the hamlet of Les Chenevières exists at the reservoir of Rabodanges which impounds the Orne.

History

On the right side of the reservoir of Rabodanges, near the Pont de Sainte -Croix ( crossing the lake), is a granite cross. At the foot of the cross we find the name of Jacques Turgot, a 1659 late adviser to the king. Previously, the cross in the middle of the old Roman bridge over the Orne was ( the reservoir was created only in 1960 ), which was destroyed on 17 August 1944 by German troops. It was the border between the municipalities of Les Rotours, Rabodanges and Sainte -Croix- sur -Orne dar. At this point previously existed another small village with about 80 inhabitants, was abandoned in the formation of the reservoir. Before the formation of the lake there were several mills. In the French overseas department of Guadeloupe, there is a channel called Canal of Rotours, named after the 1826 appointed governor of the island Jean -Julien Angot of Rotours. The ten kilometer long channel connecting Morne -à- l'Eau with Pointe -a-Pitre, was born in 1829.

The name derives from the old French word Routoir. This refers to a type pond where you could roast hemp.
