Les Steckel

Les Steckel ( born July 1, 1946 in Whitehall, Pennsylvania) is an American former American football player and coach. He spent a year as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and worked after his dismissal as assistant coach for the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Career

Steckel went to the University of Kansas, where he enjoyed great success in the sport of boxing. After his return from the Vietnam War in 1970, he played a year in the football team of his naval base. In 1973 he took over as head coach of the football team of the University of Colorado. 1978 signed him the NFL team the San Francisco 49ers. In 1979 he came to the coaching staff of the Minnesota Vikings. In 1984 he took over the team as head coach, after long -time coach Bud Grant announced his retirement. The season was, however, extremely unpleasant and ended up with only three wins in thirteen defeats. The Vikings sacked Steckel already after one season, Grant took over the team on an interim basis for a year. The following years worked Les Steckel primarily as an offensive coordinator. In 2003 he left the coaching staff of the Bufallo Bills and thus the National Football League.
