Les Sylphides

Les Sylphides (or Chopiniana ) is a short, non- narrative ballet blanc. The original choreography by Michel Fokine comes, who chose music as piano pieces by Frédéric Chopin. These, orchestrated by Alexander Glazunov. There already exist before an orchestral suite of Glazunov with the name Chopiniana, Op. 46, which was listed in 1893 under the musical direction of Rimsky- Korsakov first time.

Les Sylphides has no libretto, it is composed of various group and solo dances of the white-clad sylphs and a signified as a poet or young man dancer.

Since the work of Fokine was processed several times and he had already choreographed ballets to Chopin's music, it can be said, when the now known as Les Sylphides work had its premiere is difficult. Most June 2, 1909 is specified, the date of the first performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Tamara Karsavina with Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky and Alexandra Baldina as soloists.

Les Sylphides is often confused with La Sylphide, both are ballets in which it comes to the mythical sylphs. Otherwise, however, the works on very few similarities.
