Letcher County, Kentucky

Letcher County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Whitesburg, named after the statesman Daugherty White. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kentucky, bordered by Virginia and has an area of 878 square kilometers without significant water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Knott County, Pike County, Harlan County and Perry County.

History

The Letcher County was formed on March 3, 1842 from portions of Harlan County and Perry County. It was named after Robert Letcher, a governor of Kentucky, Congressman and ambassador to Mexico.

According to the census of 2000, there were 25 277 people in Letcher County.
