Leti Islands

The Indonesian Leti Islands ( Kepulauan indon. Leti ) belong to the Southern Moluccas.

Geography

The three Leti Islands lie east of Timor and southeast of Wetar. The largest island is Moa with the largest settlement Pati in the south. To the west of Moa is beyond the Moastraße, the smaller Leti with the place Serwaru on the north coast, east of the Lakorstraße, the island Lakor with the place Werwawan ( Warwawang, Werwaru ) on the north coast. The total area of the islands is about 750 square kilometers.

The Leti Islands form the Leti Moa Kecamatans Lakor, Pulau Lakor and Pulau Moa, ( kabupaten South Moluccas ( Maluku Barat Daya ), Maluku Province). Capital from the kabupaten is Tiakur, on the west coast Moa.

Population

On the island group live about 16,600 people, 7,000 of them on the island of Leti. There speaks to the Austronesian language Leti.

Traditionally, the Fataluku from the East Timorese Tutuala a close trading relationship, which also led to a cultural exchange. East Timor is just a sailing day of Leti away. A merchandise were batik sarongs. Since the independence of East Timor in 2002, the traditional trade across national boundaries actually declined.
