Leuk (French Loèche, Valais German Leigg ) is a municipality and the capital of the district of Leuk in the German-speaking part of the Swiss canton of Valais.

The municipality comprises the towns of Leuk-Stadt, Susten and since January 1, 2013 Erschmatt and several hamlets. On the northern slope of the Rhone valley are the hamlets of fountains, lights, Rotafen, St. Barbara and Thel. Besides Getwing, which is located on the right bank of the Rhone, stand on the left side of the Rhone river hamlet Briannen, Feithieren, Gampinen, Pfyn and Pletschen. Two thirds of the residents of the community live in Susten.

History

The area of Leuk was inhabited in the Stone Age over 4,000 years ago. It is believed that the place name comes from Leuk pre-Celtic times and the permanent settlement began therefore already at that time. The area of Leuk was successively inhabited by Ligurians, Celts, Romans, Burgundians, Franks and Alemanni and influences. The earliest preserved document in Leuk is called dated 515 AD to the year. 1142 Leuk was acquired by the Bishop of Sion, who thus became the ruler. The episcopal palace of the bishops Leuk served as a summer residence. 1256 Leuk received its town charter.

Thanks to its location at the junction of the east-west and north-south traffic, the town was an important trading center. The Gemmipass in the north has been used extensively by the Romans, as proven by countless discoveries.

On the sunny hillside wine production since Roman times. Alpine and grazing knew the Celts before. In the Middle Ages there were in Leuk over 20 mills. Addition, however, trading post, and lawyers in Leuk were established.

Leuk was the center of the Reformation in the Valais with Michael Mageran as leader. Under him, the secular and ecclesiastical power of the bishop of Sion was broken.

With effect from 1 January 2013 Erschmatt was incorporated into Leuk.

Policy

The local council of Leuk consists of seven members. In the current legislature (2009-2012) following parties are represented in the local council: CSP ( 3 seats ), CVP (2 seats) and SP ( 2 seats).

A griffin is the heraldic animal of Leuk. The griffin is a mythical creature from lions and eagles. This rule is indicated above the earth and air.

Stiftung Schloss Leuk

The Bishop Leuk Castle was handed over in 1996 by the municipality of Leuk Leuk Castle Foundation. The Foundation has made it his mission to restore the pre-Romanesque castle and meet with new life. She has to win the architect Mario Botta, who has already created a striking glass dome of the castle tower. The Foundation initiated the 2001 Spycher Literature Price Leuk.
