Lev Shcherba

Lev Vladimirovich Schtscherba (Russian Лев Владимирович Щерба, scientific transliteration Lev Vladimirovič Ščerba; * 20 Februarjul / March 3 1880greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † December 26, 1944 in Moscow ) was a Russian- Soviet linguist who as Slawist made a name.

His University Professor Jan Ignacy Baudouin de Courtenay Niecisław suggested him to explore the influence of a language by another and recommended him for the Sorbian dialects as investigation objects. From Arnost Muka he was drawn to the Muskauer dialect, after which he traveled and south of Muskau in Weißkeißel in the summer of 1907 in the Lausitz district involved. He laid his results with some delay in 1915 in his dissertation under the title " Восточнолужицкое нарѣчіе » ( Vostočnolužickoe narěčīe: " The ostniedersorbische dialect " ) before. This the first time a Slavic dialect was described systematically.
