Levantine Sea

The Levantine Sea (also: Levantine Sea ) is the easternmost part of the Mediterranean. In the north it is bounded by the Turkish coast, to the east by Syria, Lebanon and Israel, and to the south by Egypt and Libya. In the northwest, the Levantine Sea bordering the Aegean Sea (especially the southeastern part of the sea Karpathisches sea ), and to the west by the Libyan Sea. The northern part of the Levantine Sea between Cyprus and Turkey is also known as Kilikisches sea. Also in the northern part of the Levantine Sea, the three large bays Gulf of İskenderun, Golf are from Mersin ( north-east) and the Gulf of Antalya ( north-west ).

In ancient times, the maritime area from the Carpathian Sea to the Egyptian coast Mare Aegyptum ( Libyan Sea ) was called. The sea area along the coast of the former Phoenicia and the present states of Syria, Lebanon and Israel was called Phoenician sea and Latin Mare Phoenicium.
