Levanzo

Levanzo is the northernmost and smallest of the three Egadi islands in the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Sicily. Politically Levanzo belongs to the municipality as a fraction of Favignana in the Province of Trapani.

The island has an area of 5.82 km ². The highest elevation is the Pizzo Monaco, 278 meters. Levanzo has 222 inhabitants ( 2001 census).

The ancient name of the island was Phorbantia after a plant species occurring there. Under the Romans called Levanzo Buccina. Long the island remained uninhabited and apparently served as cattle pasture.

Its most famous attraction is the Grotta del Genovese Levanzo with paintings from the 10th millennium BC
