Leverano

Leverano (local name: Liranu ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,106 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is located in northeastern Salento about 16 km west- southwest of Lecce. There are 9 km west to the Ionian Sea.

History

Leverano was destroyed several times. First, by the Ostrogoths under Totila before his death 552 finally succeeded in the 9th century, the Saracens, the place to destroy. A fortification ( the Torre Friedriciana ) corresponding to the Norman architecture, was built in 1220 for protection against pirates. Its name comes from the Hohenstaufen Frederick II.

Economy

Wine from Leverano is protected designation of origin (DOC). Red Leverano DOC consists of 65% Negroamaro and 35% Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Malvasia. The minimum alcohol content is 12 percent by volume. White Leverano must have at least 11 percent by volume. He needs to 65 % of white Malvasia ( Malvasia Bianca ) exist. The remaining 35 % can be complemented by Bombino Bianco Trebbiano or.

Community partnerships

Leverano maintains partnerships with the Greek Sfakiotes in the Regional District of Lefkada in the Ionian Islands and the Spanish city of Guillena in the province of Seville.
