Leverett Saltonstall I

Leverett Saltonstall ( born June 13, 1783 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, † 8 May 1845 in Salem, Massachusetts ) was an American politician. Between 1838 and 1843 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Leverett Saltonstall received a good education. He studied at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and then to 1802 at Harvard University. After a subsequent law degree in 1805 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Salem to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1820 he ran unsuccessfully for even the U.S. House of Representatives. In the same year he was a delegate at a meeting to revise the constitution of Massachusetts. Between 1813 and 1834 he was several times delegate in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In the years 1817 and 1819 and again from 1831 to 1832 he was a member since 1831 and president of the State Senate. Between 1836 and 1838 he served as mayor of the city of Salem. In the 1830s he became a member of the Whig party.

Following the resignation of Mr Stephen C. Phillips Saltonstall was in the due election for the second seat from Massachusetts as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 5 December 1838. After two re- elections he could remain until March 3, 1843 in Congress. From 1839 to 1841 he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Navy Department. Since 1841, he headed the craft committee. The time from 1841 was marked by the tensions between President John Tyler and the Whigs. It was also at that time already been discussed about a possible annexation of the independent Republic of Texas since 1836 by Mexico.

1842 Leverett Saltonstall has not been confirmed again. For this he was again elected two years later in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. Between 1835 and 1845 he served as Overseer Board of Harvard University. He died on 8 May 1845 in Salem. Leverett Saltonstall was the great-grandfather of Leverett Saltonstall (1892-1979), who was among other things, Governor of Massachusetts and U.S. Senator.
