Levinus Hulsius

Levin or Levinus Hulsius (* 1546 in Ghent, Flanders, † March 13, 1606 in Frankfurt am Main, also Livinus Hulsius and Levinus van Hulse ) was a notary, author and publisher Calvinistic faith of the Spanish Netherlands.

Life

After a long stay in Middelburg (Netherlands) to Levin Hulsius ( Bavaria at the time) was in 1583 as a religious refugee in Frankenthal ( Pfalz) down. He founded a French school that was nationally successful. After difficulties with the city, he joined the school again in 1586 and tried in vain to announce at the University of Heidelberg French lesson. Finally, he moved to Nuremberg, where he was active as a voice teacher, notary, writer, publisher, and as a dealer with mathematical- astronomical instruments operate.

In 1602 he went for one and a half years after Holland and England.

Since 1596 he worked also as an author and publisher, among other things, a Franco- German ( 1596) and an Italian- German ( 1605 ) dictionary: both works are several editions known. A word translation from Dutch into German since 1599 the first shipping and discovery reports, which was continued to be very successful series after his death by his widow and heirs appeared ( a total of 26 travel reports).

He also published books relating to astronomy and mathematical devices. From the heirs of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), he acquired the printing plates of the Astronomiae instauratae Mechanica for a second edition (1602 ). In Scripture third tractate of mechanical instruments ( 1604/5 ), he mentions the reduction Circle of Jost Bürgi and complains that several mechanics had rebuilt its circle.

Other subjects covered by Hulsius Appliances include a semi-circle instrument and a gun attachment. Actually Hulsius wanted 16 instruments indicate and describe, but what prevented him from his unexpected death.

In addition to his employment with books Hulsius also worked as a distributor of scientific instruments such as astrolabes, quadrants, sundials as well as terrestrial and celestial globes. Maybe he was even the founder of the actual instrument trade. Although Hulsius himself had built scientific instruments, today will not get any more. The engravings for the globes sold by him should by Cornelius de Jode (1568-1600) originate.
