Levroux

Levroux is a commune with 2835 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Indre in the Centre region. Levroux is the capital of the canton Levroux.

History

On a consecration board an inscription for the Roman / Celtic god Mars Cososus was found (CIL 0013XIII, 1353 ). The city's name comes originally from the Latin leprosum. In the historical center of the town is the former Benedictine Church Saint -Sylvain, which was built in the 13th century. The organ case from 1502 is the oldest in France. The monastery of St. Sylvain in Levroux took in the 9th century to just sick with erysipelas.

The fortifications were approved in 1436 by King Charles VII and surrounded the historic old town. The ruins of the castle of the lords of Levroux is dated to 990.

Levroux is located on the road to Santiago de Compostela and was in the Middle Ages, a famous pilgrimage service area.
