Lewanika

Lewanika I. (* 1842, † 1916; aka Lubosi or Lewanika the unifier ) was the Litunga (King) of Barotseland 1878-1916 ( with an interruption from 1884 to 1885 by Tatila Akufuna ).

Lewanika agreed to after an agreement with Cecil Rhodes, that Barotseland protectorate under the British South Africa Company ( BSAC ) was. Barotseland is now part of Zambia and came in 1890 under the rule of Great Britain. Later Lewanika felt by the shape of the agreement scammed by the BSAC and complained unsuccessfully to the British crown.

Lewanika had several sons, of whom several were successively his successor as Litunga of Barotseland: Yeta III. 1916-1945, 1945-1948 Imwiko, Mbikusita = Lewanika II ( fourth son ): 1968-1977.

The name Lewanika became the family name of the descendants of Lewanika II, for example in his children, the Zambian politician Akashambatwa Mbikusita - Lewanika and the Zambian Ambassador to the U.S. Inonge Mbikusita - Lewanika.
