Lewis and Clark County is a county located in the state of Montana in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Helena.

History

The county was named after the explorers Lewis and Clark. On August 5, 1949 thirteen men a smoke jumpers died in the unit man Gulch in the area of the county. The American author Norman Maclean describes the incident in his book Young Men in the Fire (1994 ) on the turn, the American psychologist Karl E. Weick organization built one of the most famous depictions of sensemaking concept.

According to the census of 2000, there were 55,716 people in the county. There were 22,850 households, and 14,966 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.21 % White, 0.20 % African American, 2.04 % Native American, 0.52 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.38 % from other races groups; 1.61% were descended from two or more races. 1.51 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 22,850 households out of which 32.20 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.40 % were married couples living together, 9.20 % had a female householder with no husband. 34.50 % were non-families. 29.10% of all households were individuals and 8.90 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.60 % under the age of 18, 8.50 % from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44 years, 26.20% between 45 and 64 years and 11.70 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,360, and the median income for a family was $ 46,766. Males have a median income of $ 33,515, women $ 23,961. The per capita income was $ 18,763. 10.90 % of the population and 7.30 % of families are below the poverty line. 12.60% of those under age 18 and 6.50% were 65 years or older.
