Lewis County (Kentucky)
Lewis County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Vanceburg, named after its founder Joseph Calvin Vance.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, bordering the state of Ohio, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1284 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Greenup County, Carter County, Rowan County, Fleming County and Mason County.
History
Lewis County was formed on December 2, 1806 from parts of Mason County. It was named after Meriwether Lewis, an American explorers, soldiers and administrative officials. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Lewis and Clark Expedition ( Corps of Discovery, Discovery Corps ) involved.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lewis County 14,092 people in 5,422 households and 4,050 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.92 percent White, 0.21 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian, and 0.09 percent from other races; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,422 households out of which 35.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 25.3 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent of all households and 10.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98.
Based on the county the population was spread from 25.3 percent population under 18 years, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 97.0 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 22,208, and the median income for a family was $ 26,109. Males have a median income of $ 25,522, women $ 18,764. The per capita income was $ 12,031. 23.5 percent of families and 28.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 36.4 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 21.3 percent of those 65 years.
