Lewis County (Missouri)

The Lewis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. In 2010, the County had 10,211 inhabitants and a population density of 7.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Monticello, which was named after the country estate of Thomas Jefferson.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast section of Missouri and is bordered to the east - separated by the Mississippi - at Illinois; the border of Iowa is located about 20 km north. History

The Lewis County was formed in 1833 from parts of the former Marion County. It was named after Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809), a pioneer and explorer, and later governor of the Louisiana Territory ( 1808-1809 ).
