Lewis County (West Virginia)

Lewis County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Weston.

Geography

The County is located in the central north east of West Virginia and has an area of 1009 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Harrison County, Upshur County, Webster County, Braxton County, Gilmer County and Doddridge County.

History

Lewis County was formed on December 18, 1816 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after Charles Lewis, a soldier who was killed during the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Point Pleasant.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lewis County 16,919 people in 6,946 households and 4,806 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer.
