Lewis E. Payson

Lewis Edwin Payson ( born September 17, 1840 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † October 4, 1909 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1891 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1852, Lewis Payson came with his parents to Illinois, where he attended the public schools, and Lombard University in Galesburg. After a subsequent law degree in 1862 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in Ottawa in this profession. In 1865 he moved his residence and his law firm to Pontiac. From 1869 to 1873 he worked as a district judge. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1880 Payson was elected the eighth electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Greenbury L. Fort on March 4, 1881. After four elections he could pass in Congress until March 3, 1891 five legislative sessions. Since 1883 he represented there as the successor of John H. Lewis the ninth district of his state. Since 1889 he was Chairman of the Committee for the administration of state land.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Lewis Payson again practiced as a lawyer. He died on 4 October 1909 in the Bundeshauptsdat Washington.
