Lewis H. Sweetser

Lewis Hobart Sweetser ( born January 13, 1868 in San Francisco, California, † June 9, 1944 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. Between 1909 and 1913 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Idaho.

Career

Lewis Sweetser came from a ranching family who has been resident since 1871 in southern Idaho. He was later returned to its original home, where he graduated from the Urban School in San Francisco. He then studied at the University of California at Berkeley, and then at Yale University. In 1889, he returned to the family ranch in Idaho, where he ran cattle. He was also involved in various other agricultural and business enterprises. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In the years 1901 and 1902 and again from 1905 to 1906 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Idaho.

1908 Sweetser was elected to the side of James H. Brady for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho. This post he held between 4 January 1909 and 6 January 1913. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Since 1911, he served under the new Governor James H. Hawley.

In his later years Sweetser wrote historical articles in newspapers and lectured on historical events. Since 1902 he was married to Clara Hawkins. After her death, the mid-1930s he fell under the spiritualism and the occult. He died on June 9, 1944 in Los Angeles, a day after his longtime friend and business partner George Burroughs. Both were burned together in a crematorium.
