Lewis Hodous

Lewis Hodous (* December 31, 1872; † August 9, 1949 ), Ch何乐益, was an American missionary and sinologist Buddhologist.

Life

From 1902 to 1912 he was president of the Theological Seminary in Foochow. Later he was the Union of Theological Seminars in Foochow, which he himself had founded before 1914 to 1917. Lewis Hodous was until 1945 Professor of the Chinese department at the Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford.

Work

He is the author of Buddhism and Buddhists in China and, together with William Edward Soothill (1861-1935), the Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist terms. With Sanskrit and English Eqivalents and a Sanskrit - Pali Index. He is also the author of:
