Lewis Weston Dillwyn

Lewis Weston Dillwyn (* 1778 in Walthamstow, Essex, † 1855) was a member of the Royal Society and the Linnean Society of London and a British politician and Member of Parliament. His parents William Dillwyn (1743-1824), a Quaker from Pennsylvania and Sarah Dillwyn (nee Weston ) were returned in 1777 during the worst phase of Philadelphia during the American war of independence from the colonies to England and had settled in Higham Lodge, Walthamstow, Essex.

William Dillwyn was a vocal opponent of slavery and traveled here by England and Wales. It was during one of these trips on which he arranged the acquisition of the Cambrian Pottery in Swansea, Glamorganshire by George Haynes. Lewis W. Dillwyn 1802 was sent by his father to Swansea to take control of pottery. Although Dillwyn had no experience in the production of ceramics before, he was enthusiastic about this activity, and the quality of products improved during his leadership of the fabrication.

Dillwyn married in 1807 Mary Adams, daughter of Colonel John Llewelyn from Penllergare, Llangyfelach and had six children with her, including John Dillwyn Llewelyn, the photographer ( 1810-1882 ).

Lewis Weston Dillwyn was also recognized for his publications on botany and Conchologie, including The British Confervae, 1809 published an illustrated study of the British freshwater algae. Among the illustrators of this book include William Jackson Hooker, Ellen Hutchins and William Weston Young. Dillwyn is recognized as the discoverer of several species of Cladophora.

He retired in 1817 from the pottery back in 1818 he was High Sheriff of Glamorgan. In 1834 he was elected to the first reformed Parliament. Dillwyn 1839 was Mayor of Swansea. Dillwyn was a founder of the Royal Institution of South Wales and the first president of the association. In 1840 he published a short work on the history of Swansea.
