Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche

The Encyclopedia of Theology and Church ( LThK ) is a Catholic theological encyclopedia.

All editions are published by Herder in Freiburg im Breisgau; the usual scientific abbreviation is LThK (each with high-ranking figure in the edition).

First Edition 1930-1938

The 10 -volume encyclopedia built in the years 1930-1938 through the complete revision of the older and only two-volume Ecclesiastical hand lexicon ( Freiburg 1907/1912 ). It was edited by Michael Buchberger, who had also been responsible for Handlexikon. The editors of the new lexicon were at pains, an encyclopedic overall view of all aspects of the Catholic Church has to offer.

Second Edition 1957-1968

A second, completely revised edition was published by Josef Höfer and Karl Rahner 1957-1968. Since this issue was completed in a phase in which was the Catholic Church in the wake of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council in a major upheaval, three more volumes with the wording of the conciliar texts of the Second Vatican Council have been following the ten Lexicon books and the register tape appended in Latin and German with detailed comments of these texts, so this edition including index volume comprises 14 volumes. In the 1980s, an inexpensive paperback edition was launched as a so-called study or special edition.

Third Edition 1993-2001

The third edition was Walter Kasper out in the years 1993 to 2001; they in turn consists of ten volumes and a gezähltem volume 11 Registrar and Supplement. It contains about 26,000 mostly shorter articles on 8,292 pages. In 2006, a bound, well-priced special edition, 2009, a special edition hardbacks.
