Lexington is a city in Davidson County in the U.S. state of North Carolina with 19,953 inhabitants ( 2000 census ). The city area is 45.6 km ². The city was founded in 1828 Lexington lies about 30 km south of Winston -Salem, about 90 km northeast of Charlotte and about 160 kilometers west of Raleigh.

Lexington was named in honor of Lexington / Massachusetts, the city where the American War of Independence began. Lexington claims to be the "Barbecue Capital of the World ". Since 1984, every year takes place the Lexington Barbecue Festival in Lexington. Mid-1990 had the town a total of 20 barbecue restaurants and had thus to Lexington, Tennessee, the second highest concentration of restaurants in the U.S..
