Administratively Leybuchtpolder is the second youngest district after Tidofeld, which until 1996 was an independent district.

History

At the collapse of the Ley Bay during a storm surge on October 9, 1373 about 20,000 hectares of land were flooded. Both the north ( today's urban core ) and Marienhafe received access to the open sea. North after that still remained for centuries a seaport of some importance. In the next centuries of land reclamation measures were made successively, their conclusion was the reclamation of the Leybuchtpolders. Further embankments were indeed considered in the 1950s, but later no longer implemented for conservation reasons as the Ley Bay is a bird resting area of international importance.

After completion of the reclamation in 1952 began with the colonization of land newly acquired. Both locals and expellees from the former eastern territories of the German Reich were included that were recorded in the region in greater numbers. Locals and displaced persons each received half of the country. Preference is taken into account were the dike workers who had enabled the acquisition of land with their work only.

Within the polder following settlement areas have been created: 53 farms in the amount of ten to 16 acres, 21 farms in the order of seven to ten hectares and 28 workers and craftsmen bodies whose land encompassed an acre. About twelve kilometers of roads were built.

The community Leybuchtpolder was officially founded on July 1, 1954. Starting from 1965 she was member of the community Samtgemeinde Ley Bay, which was incorporated as part of the Lower Saxon municipal reform on 1 July 1972 after the north. Leybuchtpolder has since been a district with its own mayor.
