Li Xiannian

Lǐ Xiannian (* June 23, 1909, † June 21, 1992 ) was from 1983 to 1988 President of the People 's Republic of China, and then until his death chairman of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese people.

Li joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP ) in 1927 and served the People's Liberation Army during the Long March as an army captain and political commissar.

He was an influential member of the party and rose in 1956 in the Politburo. After the Cultural Revolution, he fell out of favor, but was appointed by Zhou Enlai as Finance Minister in 1973 and began the first steps on the road to a market-oriented economic system. For some years he was also Deputy Prime Minister. Li belonged to the First Chinese leadership generation.

Li is one of the Eight Immortals of the Communist Party of China.
