Lia Manoliu

Lia Manoliu ( born April 25, 1932 in Chisinau, † January 9, 1998 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian discus thrower. She took from 1952 to 1972 at six Olympic Games and won a gold and two bronze medals.

In their first appearance at the Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952 she finished sixth. 1956 in Melbourne she came only to ninth place, but then won in the next two games in Rome and Tokyo respectively the bronze medal. To participate in the Summer Games in 1968 in Mexico City Lia Manoliu was not originally provided by the Romanian association, yet they secured a starting place and won despite injury with 36 years the gold medal in front of the high favorirsierten Liesel Westermann. At the games in Munich in 1972 she finished her sporting career with the ninth. It is noteworthy that it was able to increase its power at each Olympic participation.

Lia Manoliu from 1990 to 1992 the party FSN member of the Romanian Senate.

She died in 1998 of a heart attack after she had fallen after a brain tumor operation into a coma.

The former National Stadium in Bucharest was named after her.
