Liam Kavanagh

Liam Kavanagh ( born December 9, 1935) is a former Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party.

Biography

Kavanagh, who worked as an employee of the tax collection office in the public service ( Dáil Éireann ) began his national political career as a candidate of the Irish Labour Party in 1969 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house elected. There he took after eight subsequent re- elections 28 years the interests of the constituency of Wicklow until 1997.

As such, he was delegated after the accession of Ireland in 1973 and in 1977 for representatives in the European Parliament. In 1979 he was finally elected a member of the 1st European Parliament. This he was a member until his resignation and his replacement by Séamus Pattison to June 1981.

After his resignation, he was appointed on 30 June 1981 by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Garret FitzGerald to the Minister of Labour and Minister for the Civil Service in the coalition government of Fine Gael and Irish Labour Party. This office he held until the end of the term of office of FitzGerald on March 9, 1982.

In the second coalition government of Fine Gael and Irish Labour Party appointed him as Taoiseach FitzGerald on December 14, 1982, first back to the Minister of Labour. As part of a cabinet reshuffle then took place on December 13, 1983, he was appointed Minister of the Environment. Most recently, he was in this government nor from 14 February 1986 until his resignation on January 20, 1987 Minister of Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry.

Last Kavanagh was during his last term in the Dáil from May 1993 to January 1995 and March 1995 to May 1997 Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on government-supported entities (State Sponsored Bodies Committee).
