Liard River

The Liard River is a 1115 km long left tributary of the Mackenzie River in the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and the province of British Columbia.

The river rises in the Pelly Mountains in southeastern Yukon and ends at Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories in the Mackenzie River. It drains an area of about 277,100 km ² and flows through the Liard River Valley.

Between the mouths of the Trout River and Toad River to the Liard River flows through the so-called " Grand Canyon of the Liard ," a steep-walled canyon.

History

The river's name is from the French term " liard " for the poplars (Populus deltoides) derived that grow on the banks of the river.
