Liberal Party (East Timor)

The Partidu Democrática Liberal PDL is a party in East Timor, the (Liberal Party) was founded in May 2001 as Partai Liberal. The name was changed in 2011.

Members

The party chairman in 2011 was still Armando José Dourado da Silva. He was replaced by Marito de Araújo. Secretary General is Gaspar de Araújo.

Background

The party is regarded as liberal and right- oriented. The party motto that was adopted by the Liberal Party, is Relijaun ( religion), Kultura ( culture ), Liberdade (Liberty). The party slogan is used in Tetum, while most other parties use together usually Portuguese or both official languages.

At the founding of the PL members were mainly young people who had participated in the resistance against the Indonesian occupation. In the first parliamentary elections on 30 August 2001, the party won 1.10% of the vote and a total of 88 seats in the parliament of East Timor. My deputy was Carlos de Almeida Sarmento. Their strongholds had the PL in the districts Oecussi- Ambena (5.7%) and Viqueque ( 3.1%).

In the elections to the Parliament on 30 June 2007, the Partai Liberal no longer joined with its own list.

In the parliamentary elections on 7 July 2012, the Partidu Democrática Liberal failed due to the three- percent threshold with 0.47 % ( 2,222 votes). In the district of Ermera the PDC achieved its best result with 1.79%.
