History

Its origins lie with the liberals or liberal conservatives of the 19th century, which advocated strongly federalist positions. These were part of the regeneration movement 1830-1848 and then positioned themselves in the new parliament in the center. In most cantons, they went to the Liberals, in 1894 the Swiss Free Democratic Party founded. In the Reformed cantons of French-speaking Switzerland ( Geneva, Vaud and Neuchâtel ) and Basel-Stadt they remained independent and founded in 1893, the liberal- democratic faction in the National Council, at the time had 13 members, and in 1913 the Liberal Party of Switzerland, at the beginning also sections in the cantons of Zurich, Schaffhausen, Graubünden, Fribourg and Bern included. Between 1917 and 1919, the Liberals had with the Geneva Gustave Ador even has its own Federal Council.

Although the party was trying to gain a foothold, but with durchzogenem result in the 80s and 90s, in the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Bern, Fribourg, Valais and Zurich. The basel scenic section broke up again. The other sections were meaningless, only in Valais she could gain two seats in parliament. This failure can be attributed to the fact that their right-wing liberal positions in the canton of Zurich were already represented by the FDP, in the canton of Bern from the SVP.

The Swiss Parliament elections in 2003, the Liberals lost their parliamentary seats in Basel and Neuchâtel, and were therefore only represented by two seats in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud in the National Council. Thus, the Liberals lost the faction status; they joined the FDP.
