Liberian constitutional referendum, 1847

A constitutional referendum was held on 27 September 1847 in Liberia, which had a few months earlier, declared on 26 July 1847 for independent. The Liberian government controlled at this time only a narrow, populated by immigrant Americo- Liberians coast of present-day Liberia. The put to the vote first Constitution of Liberia should establish the office of Executive President and a two- chamber system with the Senate and House of Representatives.

The constitution limited the right to vote to persons of African descent and people with land ownership. Only 279 voters participated in the vote and accepted the constitution with almost 80 % approval. Agreement and disagreement were clearly distributed regionally: In Monrovia, Castle Mills, Bassa Cove and Bexley 100 % of voters supported the Constitution, in the resort Sinoe voted 100 % against it. A more mixed result, there was in the other three villages where the vote was taken.

The so confirmed Constitution of Liberia remained until 1984 in force.
