Libusa ( tschech. Libuse ) is an opera in three acts by Bedřich Smetana. The libretto was written by Josef Wenzig and translated into Czech by Ervin Špindler.

Smetana composed the opera in the years 1869 to 1872, she was on 11 June 1881 in Prague premiered at the opening of Národní Divadlo ( National Theatre).

Action

Act I

Libusa waiting together with Krasava and Radmila on the advice of the judge in the inheritance dispute between the brothers Chrudoš and Šťáhlav because she has to decide on the matter. Krasava makes her a confession: the daughter of Lutobor was not quite unconcerned, they play the two boys against each other, by doing so, as they love Šťáhlav. Next to the castle, the judgment of the princess is already expected. Libusa shares to each of the two half of the inheritance, but Chrudoš wants to appeal the decision, as it was given by a woman. The people should choose for Libusa a husband who speaks right in their place. But the people will not find anyone for her and so she chooses Přemysl of Staditz as a man.

Second Act

On father of Chrudoš and Sťáhlav grave should Krasava and Chrudoš of Lutobor be reconciled. Krasava confess their wrongs and wants Chrudoš reconciled with his brother Šťáhlav. In addition, Chrudoš should apologize to Libusa.

While the reapers sing in their work, Přemysl is under a lime tree and dreams of Libusa, which was several times a guest. Suddenly Radovan comes on top of a secondment to tell him that he was appointed Prince of Bohemia and husband of Libusa. Now he has to take from his homeland farewell.

Act Three

On the Vyšehrad the arrival of Přemysl is celebrated. Chrudoš begging in front of the couple to apologize. In a magical moment Libusa sees into the future: you see a lot of Czech heroes: Prince Břetislav, Knight Jaroslav von Sternberg, King Otakar II, Charles IV and George of Podiebrad. After several wars come using the Hussites democracy and freedom to power. With a glorification of Czech opera ends.
