Licata

Licata is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Licata located 47 kilometers southeast of Agrigento on the coast. Here live 38 057 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture and in industry. In addition, there are jobs in the service sector and tourism.

Licata is on the railway line Caltanissetta Gela - Syracuse. From the port of Licata from, a major export port in Sicily, there is a boat connection to Valletta in Malta.

The neighboring municipalities are Butera (CL) Camastra, Campobello di Licata, Naro, Palma di Montechiaro and Ravanusa.

History

The territory was inhabited in the Palaeolithic period. 280 BC moved Phintias of Akragas here the inhabitants of the then ruined city Gela and founded the city of " Phintiades ".

Among the Romans a harbor was built in Licata, who made the city an important commercial center and hub for wheat. The city was plundered by the Turks in 1553. She recovered and was expanded to the northwest.

  • On the summit of Sant 'Angelo a hill fort lies with a tower dating from the 17th century. Below the castle is the church of Santa Maria la Vetere.
