Lidköping

Lidköping is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Västergötland on the lake Vänern. The town lies at the mouth of the river Lidan in Vänern and is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

When Lidköping was founded is unknown, but in 1446 Lidköping received the first city privileges. About this time skippers had taken from Vänern in importance, and the city of Lidköping became an important commercial city, with crops and livestock from Skaraborg against wood and iron ore were traded from Bergslagen.

1670 was founded by Count Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie a new city on the western shore of the Lidan exactly opposite the ancient city of Lidköping. Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie promoted his new city, which was created by a strictly geometrical plan, of forces, among others, he had a hunting lodge transport in the new town, which was to serve as a city hall. It was not until 1705, the two cities were united.

In the first half of the 18th century the city grew because of increasing trade. This was followed by further growth of the overall development. 1849, the city was destroyed in a big fire partially, but could recover. In the 20th century Lidköping became an important industrial city.

Cityscape

From the old, medieval town is hardly get anything because almost everything was destroyed in the great fire of 1849. A few houses are but the Limtorget in the old part of town, Gamla Staden get east of the river Lidan. The new, founded in 1670 the city has a rectangular floor plan with an unusually large main square, the Nya Staden Torg ( German: Neustadt place). Is the old town hall, a former hunting lodge on this square. Furthermore, there are numerous wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Economy

Lidköping is an important industrial city and port.

With the purchase of narrow- Lidköping- Håkantorps Järnväg ( HLJ ) in 1902, the city became the operator of a railway that for 1912, the founding of Lidköping Järnvägar initiated into the ways to manage more independent railway companies. 1948, the shares of the companies were provided as part of the general railroad nationalization of the state railway company Statens Järnvägar.

Since 1911 there is a porcelain factory in Lidköping, which formerly belonged to Rörstrand, which now belongs to the company Iittala. It was closed in 2006. A museum shows the development of Rörstrand. In Lidköping is the Vänermuseum.

With KMT Precision Grinding one of Sweden's oldest producer of mechanical equipment is located in Lidköping. The company manufactures high quality grinders. The company is an association of UVA International AB, which was founded in 1928 as Nomy AB in Stockholm as well as KMT Lidköping, which was founded in 1875 as Lidköpings Mekaniska Verkstad AB.

Lidköping can be achieved over the airfield Lidköping- Hovby.
