Council of Love is a film adaptation of the satirical and grotesque theater piece The Council of Love (1894 ) by Oskar Panizza from the year 1982. The film directed by Werner Schroeter was banned by the Austrian government in 1985 on the grounds that he insulted the Christian religion.

1994 the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Otto Preminger - Institute v. Austria, that the banning of the film a legitimate restriction of the freedom of art is because the film could hurt religious feelings of Catholics.
