Liechtenstein national football team

The Liechtenstein national football team is the national team of the Liechtenstein Football Association ( LFV ) and represents Liechtenstein at the international level. Since 1994, Liechtenstein regularly takes part in the qualifiers for the European Championship and the World Cup.

History

Under Martin Andermatt Liechtenstein reached a 2-2 draw against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers on 9 October 2004, which can be referred to date as the biggest success for the Liechtenstein team. It was the first point of Liechtenstein in a World Cup qualifier. Four days later, they reached their first away success at all. They won in Luxembourg in World Cup qualifier equal to 4:0. Successes in 2005 were 0-0 against the group runners-up Slovakia and another convincing win against Luxembourg 3-0. In qualifying for the 2008 European Championship on 28 March 2007 managed a 1-0 win over Latvia, and on October 17, 2007, a 3-0 win over Iceland.

In the years 1999, 2004 and 2005, the national team was honored at the athletes meeting places of Liechtenstein Olympic Sports Association as Team of the Year.

In the junior level, Liechtenstein was for the U -16 Football Championship in 1998 qualify in Scotland, at the U -19 Football Championship on home soil in 2003 they took part as the host also. In both cases, however, they lost all three group games and thus different from an early stage. 2010 U-17 Football Championship was held in Liechtenstein, the Association withdrew its automatically qualified choice but back due to lack of competitiveness of the tournament.

In qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil Liechtenstein met on Bosnia - Herzegovina, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia and Slovakia. There go two draws at the home games against Latvia and Slovakia ( 1:1) as well as one goal scored by the two games against the eventual group winners and World Cup participants Bosnia - Herzegovina. But this was only enough to last place in the group.

In qualifying for the Euro 2016 Liechtenstein meets Russia, Sweden and Austria, and for the first time on Moldova and Montenegro.

Current squad

Most players of the Liechtenstein national football team are currently playing for clubs in Swiss league, primarily in the Challenge League ( FC Vaduz ) and the first League Classic.

Mario Frick, with over 200 games in the Swiss Super League and the Italian Serie A, the largest export of the Liechtenstein football, but also some other players have managed the leap into international countries. Basically almost all performers were at least of the team at any one club employed abroad and in the last twenty years the team has changed from an amateur team to a professional team.

Especially since 2008 has taken place in the squad a natural alternation of generations, with the player of the beginnings of the Liechtenstein professional football due to age replaced by a new generation of young players.
