Liepāja lake

The Liepaja Liepaja lake or lake ( Latvian: Liepaja ezers ) is a lake near the city of Liepāja in western Latvia. He is one of the largest lakes in Latvia.

The lagoon lake is separated by a several km wide dune from the sea. As a result of eutrophication shallower parts of the lake are covered with extensive reed beds. 15 islands occupy a total area of ​​35 hectares. The bottom of the lake under a layer of sapropel is sandy. The largest tributaries are Bārta, ides and Otaņķe. Discharge into the Baltic Sea is the 1703 finished trading channel ( lett Tirdzniecības channel ), which serves the city as a port of Libau. Sampling points are located on the eastern, facing away from the sea side of the lake for drinking water needs of the city.

In the lake are at least 24 different species of fish stated. The lake is an important breeding area for birds and also recreation area of the city of Liepāja.
