Lieuwe van Aitzema

Lieuwe (Leo) van Aitzema (* November 19, 1600 in Dokkum, Friesland, Netherlands, † February 23, 1669 in The Hague, Netherlands) was a Dutch historian, diplomat, bon vivant, philanderer and spy.

Life

Lieuwe van Aitzema, son of Meinardus of Aitzema, was born on November 19, 1600 in Dokkum, a place in today's province of Friesland in the Netherlands. He studied law at the University of Franeker, and the universities of Paris and Orléans, where he was known as a womanizer.

In 1617 he published a volume of Latin poems under the title Poemata Juvenilia, a copy of which is kept in pound museum. He also studied politics, and political science and was thirty years based in the cities of the Hanseatic League at The Hague, where he died on February 23, 1669.

Among his most important works, the Saken van staet in Oorlogh in the end omtrent de Nederlanden Vereenigte counts (14 vols. 4to, 1655-1671 ), which covers the period 1621-1668. It contains a large number of government documents and is an invaluable source for one of the most eventful periods of Dutch history.

Four historical sequels were successfully published by the poet and historian Lambert van den Bos in Amsterdam in the years 1685, 1688, 1698 and 1699. The Derde Vervolg Zinde het vierde stucco van het op de vervolgh history, & c. , Goes up to 1697.

Family

Lieuwe van Aitzemas father was mayor of Dokkum and Admiralty secretary. His uncle, Meinardus of Aitzemas younger brother, Foppe van Aitzema, was a prominent lawyer and politician.
