Ligamenta flava

The ligamentum flavum (Latin for " yellow ribbon ") is a case between two vertebrae located, the spine stabilizing band.

The ligamentum flava are each stretched between the vertebral arches and therefore were formerly referred to as ligaments interarcualia. So that you limit the respective intervertebral foramen ( intervertebral foramen ) from the middle ( medial) and back ( dorsal). Their yellow color is caused by scissor lattice -like arrangement of elastic fibers constituting the tapes, for the most part. Even at rest, these bands are excited. In the flexion of the spine, they are then stretched more and thus help the righting.

When a puncture of the epidural space (see epidural anesthesia ) or subarachnoid space is the light resistance when piercing this band is indicative for the accurate positioning of the cannula.
