LightDM

LightDM is an alternate X Display Manager. LightDM is less complex than GDM with 50,000 rows with 5,000 lines of program code. Nevertheless, it provides almost the same functionality as the GDM ready. The smaller code base is easier to maintain, can be easily adapted to new requirements and execution speed is much higher. The design goals are:

  • Fast: the display manager should not be reflected in a longer start-up time of the system.
  • Fail-safe: Exception situations are handled.
  • Sure: Users with unpleasant intentions have no chance.
  • Flexible: many application scenarios are supported.
  • Expandable: rare application scenarios can be supported by plug-ins.
  • Simple: the configuration should be simple and easy to understand the code base and change.

LightDM separates the core functions, such as access to the ConsoleKit or energy management, clear of the user interface, the so-called " Greeter ". In LightDM you can implement at a cost of a few days, a new user interface. LightDM can with several user interfaces to deal at the same time, thus making it easy to experiment with new ideas, and it allows, for example, a distribution easy to configure a specific appearance. There are, inter alia, user interfaces based on WebKit, Qt, GTK and KDE Plasma.

The simple code base and easy configuration were the main reasons that LightDM the default X Display Manager from Ubuntu and Xubuntu was 11:10. Also in Lubuntu he has from 12:04 replaced the previously used lxdm and Kubuntu he solved with version 12:10 KDE 's KDM from.
