Lightning rod tower

A lightning rod tower is usually designed as a steel truss construction building which primarily serves as a lightning rod. It must be much higher than that before the lightning object to be protected.

Lightning rod towers to be built on some launch ramps, where the supply tower, which can take over the lightning protection, is driven away in the last phase of the countdown, so that in case of a storm, there is the probability of a lightning strike in the rocket with the risk of damage to the onboard electronics, the you want to prevent in this way. One example is the 200 -meter-high towers at the launch pad of the Ariane 5 from Kourou, French Guiana.

Another example is the compact transmission line in the Ukrainian city of Lutsk (Ukraine ), where also several lightning rod towers are used to protect the high-voltage line. This could be done without the ground wire.
