Ligia

Ligia sp.

Ligia is a genus of terrestrial isopods. They live in the splash zone of marine rocky beaches.

Features

Ligia are larger than woodlice and reach lengths of up to a few centimeters. Some forms of the genus Ligia have a not very strong pronounced Höckerung, which is associated with a region serving as an enemy protection Anpressverhalten. The nimble Ligia species with longer legs, however, have neither a significant Höckerung nor the Anpressverhalten.

Habitat and Distribution

The habitat of the species Ligia is located in the splash zone of marine rocky beaches. Their range extends to Japan and Pacific islands such as Hawaii. None of the species included in the Red List of endangered animal species.

Way of life

Ligia feed as scavengers on detritus which accumulates on beaches and in harbors.
