Lignotuber

A Lignotuber is a woody thickening at the base of stems of woody plants that includes "sleeping eyes ", even "dormant buds ".

Lignotuber come in many eucalypt species, but also other species of the myrtle family ( Myrtaceae ), particularly in Australia, particularly in the form of vegetation Mallee ago. This thickening is sitting on the Earth surface or just below and can also be completely underground. In addition to the " dormant buds " it also contains nutrients.

If the above-ground parts of plants destroyed by a forest fire, a flood or being eaten by animals, the Lignotuber is usually not damaged and the wood can be re- cast out from there Proventivknospen so that a new crown is created in a short time. Due to the nutrients contained in the woody plant Lignotuber can also spend some time without photosynthesis to grow.
